I have this friend that needed my experience as a mechanic to help him replace the front 2 hubs on his Toyota Prius Sedan. He had replaced these hubs once before resulting from the same problem for the same reason as this time. He bought them from the same Dealer from the internet as before. He had to replace the first set because the bearings had gone out on them after a trip to California and back. Which is quite frustrating, because he hadn’t had them on there all that long. Once we got the right front wheel off and checked that old hub we were surprised to feel how had the bearings had gotten in such a short time. So then, we went ahead and cleaned up the steering knuckle with a wire wheel and cleaning it of all degree and rust. Before reinstalling the new hub.
Once the right side was finished we jumped over to the left front wheel. We started to take the left wheel apart and I checked the new hub while my friend was taking the old hub apart and the new hub had a flat spot in it. Which deeply irritated my friend since it was brand new. I recommend to him after we both felt the flat spot he realized he was going to have to do this YET again in the not too far future that he not use the internet supplier next time and buy locally so he would know what he was getting and have a way to return them if there was a problem.
Once we cleaned the knuckle on this side we finished the reinstall of this hub and I did not take a picture of putting red thread lock on it for the bolts that hold the hubs in place. Then after the hub is mounted in place then the rotor then the caliper. Then we get to reinstall the wheel then we are finished.
See this how this nut and the axle is not lined up? The divot or notch like a thing is where the nut should be holding its spot in place so there’s no movement or spinning off of the hub.
Now we take the car out for a “Victory Run”, as my friend Travis always says, and it’s good to go!!!!
